Before our summer vacations commence, we have a special PyData meetup in store for you!

We are super excited to announce this PyData’s main speakers, Dimitrios Sakellaris, Founder and Director at Statathlon, Konstantinos Chatzimichalis, VP of Data Science Engineering at Signal Ocean and Polykarpos Meladianos, Data Scientist at Signal Ocean!

Dimitri will talk to us about data science in sports analytics, while Konstantinos and Polykarpos will present to us the use of data science in the shipping industry. Thank you guys, its a great honour to have you at our next event!

18.30 – 19.00 Networking time

19.00 – 19.35 Augmented Decision Making utilizing multiple Data Sources, the story of Statathlon, Dimitrios Sakellaris, Founder and Director at Statathlon Ltd

Abstract:
The first part of the presentation will be focused on the overview of Sports Analytics services, its importance and the current situation in Sports environment. During the second part the presenter will be focused on the technical mechanics behind the Decision Management Tool, the main solution of Statathlon. The next part will be focused on the provided value specific real-case scenarios in football and basketball. The final part will be focused on how a growing company in the field of Sports Analytics can commercialize its idea and find its way to sustainability and growth (challenges and market immaturity).

Bio:
Statathlon provides innovative Performance Analytics to Basketball (such as CSKA Moscow, the[masked] EuroLeague Champions) and Football clubs, in the form of Game Management and Player 360-degree Monitoring Reports. Other Deliverables include Scouting and Injury Rate & Prevention Reports, and Fan Engagement.

19.40 – 20.20 Data Science for the Shipping Industry

Abstract:
Maritime Transport is the backbone of the global economy as 90% of globally traded goods have been on a ship at some point of their logistical trail . Signal Ocean is a technology company that develops solutions to enhance commercial shipping performance. The company invests a lot on developing novel algorithms and machine learning models to gather and fuse information from various sources and to predict vessel movements. We will give an overview of the problems we aim to solve and then focus more on the NLP side of the business.

Bios:
Konstantinos Chatzimichalis is a VP of Data Science Engineering at Signal Ocean where he has worked at for the last 5 years. He previously worked at the asset management part of Barclays Capital and at GLI. He is a graduate of the Applied Mathematics and Physical Sciences school of NTUA and holds an MSc in Mathematical and Computational Finance from the University of Oxford. His experience and interests lie in the areas of Data Science, Software Engineering, Financial Mathematics and Product Management.

Polykarpos Meladianos is currently a data scientist at Signal Ocean where he works on data ingestion pipelines and models. Previously he worked on OpenPaaS speech to text summarization project and the National Library of Greece Web Archive. He has obtained a Ph.D. from Athens University of Economics and Business(AUEB) in 2018, a Master on Data Sciences from Ecole Polytechnique, Paris in 2016 and his engineering diploma from the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), Greece in 2013. His interests include the areas of machine learning, data mining, neural networks focusing on text mining and natural language processing.
