Understanding Cognitive Load Theory for Better Online Course Design

Fundamental decisions about online course design can be daunting, but a basic understanding of Cognitive Load Theory (CLT) – that is, the way our learners process information – can help inform and guide these decisions. In this session, we will use the fundamentals of CLT to explore Moodle’s course design tools, features, and strategies. Using lots of examples (the good and the bad!), we will look at different course formats and how these impact the overall look, feel, and function of your course, as well as features such as stealth mode, activity completion, and auto-linking that can help streamline navigation and scaffold learning experiences.

By using Moodle to reduce extraneous cognitive load, we can create cleaner, more organized, online learning environments for our students.
