The Society is pleased to announce our next Canadian Open Data Summit will take place November 7th & 8th at the Sternwheeler Hotel & Conference Centre in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory.

Since 2013, the Summit has been the go-to event for open data advocates, publishers and users; civic technologists; smart city ground-breakers; open government specialists; data literacy champions; newcomers to open data who want to survey the national scene and learn more; and indeed all data-fluent members of civil society!

This two-day event will take place from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. YT Monday, November 7th and Tuesday, November 8th. We are hosting this year’s Summit in Whitehorse because we hope that practitioners and advocates from across the Arctic and northern territories (and across the various practice areas) will share their unique experiences, insights and successes with Canada’s Open Data Community as a whole, and in return we wish to place that community at the service of all the peoples of the North.

Register to attend virtually if you cannot attend in person – that option is now LIVE!

Version 1.0 of the Summit agenda has been published as of September 21st, and can be viewed here. It will be updated frequently as we confirm more speakers, presenters, panels and workshops!

Our Summits introduce practitioners, champions and entrants to professional development in data for the public good. Our overarching aim for this Summit is to empower practitioners and advocates at every stage of their journey from the start, with generally-applicable Open Data professional development content and activities that stimulate capacity-building, innovation and progress regardless of participants’ subject areas.

In short: you do not have to be focused on any of the themes below; they have been chosen in order to generally evoke the most current and innovative thinking from across the North.

This year’s Summit features the following focus areas:

  • Data-Driven Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Economic Development: We see tremendous and highly inclusive opportunities in the leveraging of data and especially Open Data by entrepreneurs from all walks of life. Data can hone any business, and can be used to advantage regardless of location.
  • Indigenous Data Sovereignty: As Canada, First Nations, Métis & Inuit pursue reconciliation, principled approaches including First Nations’ Ownership, Control, Access & Possession (OCAP) of their data are key. This must be understood not only in theoretical, but also practical terms, as data governance strategies are developed.
  • Open Data on the Front Lines of Climate Change: The increasingly noticeable effects of anthropogenic climate change are manifest most of all across the North. Open Data is a key strategem for all research and response activities in this space, and it must be propagated and leveraged among all participants.
