The European Union is committed to promoting environmentally responsible business practices and recognises the potential of ecosystem (or natural capital) accounting to provide a concrete basis for reporting business performance. Ecosystem accounting serves to map out the impacts or dependencies on natural resources, assigning a monetary value to them. In fact, the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 sees ecosystem accounting as a key tool to integrate biodiversity considerations into public and business decision making. Moreover, the Commission will support the establishment of an international natural capital accounting initiative. In addition, another crucial policy tool for cost-effectively reducing greenhouse gas emissions was set by the Commission back in 2005: the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS). The EU ETS is the world’s first international emissions trading system. Under this scheme, companies receive or buy emission allowances within a cap on the overall volume of greenhouse gases. This cap decreases annually to ensure total emissions fall. In this context, carbon and ecosystem accounting are crucial. From helping monitor land coverage to measuring methane and carbon dioxide fluxes and emissions, Copernicus is an asset for both carbon and ecosystem accounting.

This webinar aims to highlight the potential of Copernicus data on this area.
