This year I learned: Sometimes you must remove an “alt” attribute from an “img” tag to make something accessible. (en)

  • Angelos Chaidas, Software Engineer @ Adzuna

What happens when an experienced web developer (who naively thought he knew all about “a11y” (accessibility) gets to work together with no less than two external accessibility expert agencies in order to deliver a WCAG-2.1 compliant service to the UK government?

Is it as simple as adding a few “alt” attributes and “aria-*” attributes to various elements? Or does it get much MUCH more complicated than this?
In this talk, we’ll skim the surface of what it means to develop an accessible service, from getting JAWS to behave, understanding how user acceptance testing becomes a herculean task after adding VoiceOver and Dragon to it, and how much harder development gets if you must deliver a compliant service.
And yes. We will remove some alt tags. You’ll see why.

Angelos has 20 years of experience in web development. He has happily spent the last 12 of those working as a frontend developer and UX designer in Adzuna. He loves all things HTML / CSS / JS and is probably one of the few people who actually enjoys delving into legacy jQuery monoliths and breaking them apart.

19:50 – 20:00
A word from our sponsor: Netcompany – Intrasoft (gr)

Netcompany-Intrasoft is a leading European IT Solutions and Services Group with strong international presence and expertise, offering innovative and added-value solutions of the highest quality to a wide range of international and national public and private organizations.

20:00 – 20:45
Building a large scale customer facing portal using Nuxt/VueJS technologies and an AWS based microservices architecture (gr)

  • Giorgos Seriatos, Software Engineer @ Spitogatos
  • Panagiotis Gkatzelidis, Front-End Engineer @ Spitogatos

Challenges faced in code architecture, performance, SEO optimization and Core Web Vitals. Lessons learned and pitfalls. (Will include topics such us: Nuxt best practices for large scale applications and SEO, Atomic design, typescript, A/B testing, nuxt-bridge, BE challenges and architecture outline)

Giorgos is a Software Engineer at Spitogatos. He is a full stack web developer specializing in JavaScript and PHP technologies, adept at designing scalable and efficient solutions.

Panagiotis is a Front-End Engineer at Spitogatos. These past few years he was mainly working on large Nuxt/Vue projects and was constantly clashing with Google’s Core Web Vitals. This year’s goal is to create a common Design Language System between design teams & engineering teams.
