Vodafone Greece is transforming its infrastructure with the launch of C.E.L.L., a platform rooted in TMForum’s Open Digital Architecture, shifting from monolithic systems to a microservices-based approach. This move aims to overcome challenges in release management, post-deployment operations and environmental provisioning. The key feature of CELL is its innovative use of Kubernetes, integrating DevOps and software engineering through Custom Resources and the Java Operator SDK. This presentation will delve into the integration of Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) practices, detailing the implementation challenges and solutions in our Kubernetes setup, and how we’re blending DevOps with software engineering to develop a state-of-the-art enterprize telecommunications platform.

Presenters:

• Christos Sotiriou is a seasoned Principal Architect at Vodafone with 17 years of industry experience. In his previous role, he led the creation of DXL, a 170+ microservices middleware serving as the foundation for Vodafone GR’s digital services. With past experience and expertise in Node.js, Java, and iOS, he’s actively sharing knowledge through technical articles on Medium and his personal website.
• Nikos Nikolakakis is a seasoned Site Reliability Engineer currently leading the team at Vodafone Greece. With a rich background spanning over 12 years in the IT industry, he has contributed significantly to large-scale projects at notable companies including OTE, Dixons, and Vodafone, among others. His expertise lies in ensuring robust and reliable IT operations, particularly in high-demand settings.

In today’s fast-paced digital landscape, scaling and managing applications across multiple regions can be a daunting challenge. Join us for a deep dive into the journey of transforming a serverless architecture with over 50 microservices, previously running on AWS Lambda, into a streamlined monolith using Kubernetes (K8s), ArgoCD, and Terraform. Discover how we leveraged these powerful tools to not only reduce costs but also simplify the complexity of our infrastructure, all while maintaining a small team of just five members.
