The fashion industry is one of the most significant contributors to the global economy, employing 300 million people worldwide and it is expected to grow significantly in the coming years. However, the negative environmental impact of the industry is also substantial. The production, transportation and disposal of clothing and textiles are responsible for 10% of annual global carbon emissions. They also contribute to water scarcity in several regions, due to usage during the life cycle of products and water source pollution from contaminated wastewaters.
EU policies, such as the Circular Economy Action Plan and the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, aim to reduce waste and increase the sustainability of production and consumption in the fashion industry. These policies promote the use of sustainable materials, increase transparency and traceability in the fashion supply chain and hold product producers accountable for managing the waste generated during their products’ life cycles. By implementing sustainable practices throughout their supply chains, companies can differentiate themselves from competitors and appeal to consumers who prioritise sustainability. On top of legal obligations, sustainable supply chains can contribute to long-term business viability and mitigate risks associated with environmental and social issues. Space data, particularly Copernicus data, can help the fashion industry make its supply chain more sustainable, thus contributing to EU’s overarching goals.
