Deforestation and forest degradation contribute significantly to global warming and biodiversity loss. The main driver of deforestation and forest degradation is the expansion of agricultural land to produce commodities such as cattle, wood, palm oil, soy, cocoa or coffee. To address this issue, the EU has introduced a new regulation aimed at minimising the consumption of products associated with deforestation or forest degradation. Copernicus can play a crucial role in allowing companies to comply with the due diligence rules set by this new regulation. Satellite imagery can be used to identify areas where deforestation has occurred and to monitor changes in forest cover over time. Other remote sensing data, such as Synthetic Aperture Radar, can detect changes in forest structure and topography, providing additional information on forest degradation and conversion.
This webinar will showcase how Copernicus data and Earth Observation in general can be utilised to monitor and protect the world’s forests.
During this webinar you will hear from experts in the field:
- Inge Jonckheere, Food and Agriculture Organization
- Frédéric Achard, Joint Research Centre – European Commission
