The development of Copernicus and the emergence of new commercial players in Earth Observation (EO) as part of the NewSpace phenomenon has led to a huge increase in availability of EO data and derived products. This development, coupled with higher revision rates, increased spatial resolution and other trends characterising the EO sector, enabled new use cases within the fields of insurance and finance, and resulted in an increasing permeation of EO in this market segment.
The use cases of EO data in insurance and finance are indeed multiple. In finance, EO data and derived products are used in commodity trading to monitor crop acreage and health, and can be combined with other data to estimate yield, develop price projections and ultimately inform trading decisions. EO data can be leveraged by a wide range of financial users and institutions, including investment banks, venture capital firms, private equity and many more. EO is increasingly recognised as providing key information for investment and asset management.
In insurance, EO data is used both for risk assessment as well as damage evaluation. Due to the nature of these applications, a distinction can be made between the types of EO data exploited, wherein the former mostly relies on archived EO information, while the latter leverages real-time or near-real-time data for ex-post facto evaluations.
