EmacsConf 2022 will be live-streamed, with an option to join others in Lucerne, Switzerland, for a two-day meeting around the live-streams.  The content will often be technical, but from an OSOR perspective, or for anyone who wants to see how a vibrant software community can be maintained for four decades(!), the Emacs project is an example of how collaboration and community can be the core of a project.

Emacs is primarily a text editor, but the focus was always on making it as easy as possible for all parts to be customised and expanded.  The result is a software package that has been expanded and refined and forked and merged by multiple generations of contributors.  It started as a tiny editor with some extra scripts/macros (“editor macros”, Emacs), but it has been under constant expansion based on what users want and is now used for software project management, data processing & visualisation, calendar & tasks, email, and many other tasks.
